This city was originally a fishing village, whose strategic location on the Han Jiang estuary. Once known as Swatow, it soon became a major center for trade. In 1980, it was declared a Special Economic Zone and today it is essentially a modern city. The old quarter still has a few sights of interest such as the restored 1879 Tianhou Gong, a temple with vibrant carvings. Nearby along Anping Lu are the remains of old houses and warehouses. East of Anping Lu at the waterfront is Shipaotai Park.
